Gold nanoparticles monitor protein folding

* Gold nanoparticles monitor protein folding *

Faulty protein folding plays a role in medical conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, cystic fibrosis, and BSE (mad cow disease). Now, scientists at Stanford University have found that they could monitor changes in the folding of a yeast protein by attaching gold nanoparticles.

New look for nanomotors

* New look for nanomotors *

Physicists in the US have built the first nanoelectromechanical device that exploits the effects of surface tension. The "relaxation oscillator" consists of two droplets of liquid metal on a substrate made of carbon nanotubes and can be controlled with a small applied electric field. Alex Zettl and colleagues at the University of California at Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory say the device could find use in various nanomechanical applications, including actuators and motors.

Nanoparticles create active tips for near-field optical microscopy

* Nanoparticles create active tips for near-field optical microscopy *

Researchers at the University Joseph Fourier, CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) and CEA Grenoble (Atomic Energy Commission), France, have created an active optical tip for near-field scanning optical microscopy with just a few nanoparticles of cadmium selenide at its apex. The scientists believe their tip may even contain just one nanoparticle.

Carbon nanotubes boost hydrogen storage

* Carbon nanotubes boost hydrogen storage *

Researchers at the University of Québec à Trois-Rivières in Canada have used single-walled carbon nanotubes to improve the hydrogen storage capabilities of catalyzed sodium alanates. The tubes improved the sorption kinetics of the material by a factor of four.
